Bitcoin: Digital gold? Or just another bubble?

Why you should watch: Bloomberg has (apparently) been pitching Bitcoin as a hedge against the pandemic, suggesting in June that it might in fact double in value by year-end. Maybe. Ytd, it is up 50% - which actually beats gold, which is up 25%. And it has done far better than the dollar, which is down around 2.4% ytd and almost 5% year-on-year. But, even though it has been around for a dozen years, Bitcoin is still nowhere near cracking the market as a serious alternative to transactional fiat currencies - and the cost of mining is kinda sorta getting out of hand. Maybe environmentalists should fret that (according to some experts) somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0% of total energy consumption is now going into Bitcoin mining. This panel brings together an eminent US academic from the University of Chicago, two UK-based entrepreneurs who are making crypto trading (not just Bitcoin) more accessible, and FT Alphaville's resident sceptic.

Panellists:

Eric Budish is the Steven Rothmeier Professor of Economics at Chicago's Booth School of Business and a research associate at the NBER. He is also co-director of the University's Initiative on Global Markets, and recently presented an important paper on Bitcoin and blockchain at the Atlanta Fed.

Mark Hipperson is the CEO of Ziglu, which has recently obtained a banking license, and which offers retail customers the opportunity to trade Bitcoin at competitive rates. He is a former CTO at Starling Bank and at Centrip, and spent 11 years at Barclays on the technology side.

Jack Gavigan is the head of product and regulatory affairs at the Electric Coin Co, where he has been developing Z/Cash as a new crypto currency. He defines himself as a 'fintechnologist focussed on virtual currencies and blockchain technology'. He is a former trader, who also worked with Mark at Starling.

Jemima Kelly, who anchors the CSFI's monthly FinTech review, is a reporter for FT Alphaville whose beat includes technology.
